Nó là cần thiết cho sự phân hủy adenosine từ thực phẩm và cho sự thay đổi của axit nucleic trong các mô.Chức năng chính của nó ở người là sự phát triển và duy trì hệ thống miễn dịch.[3] Tuy nhiên, vai trò sinh lý đầy đủ của ADA vẫn chưa được hiểu rõ.[4]
